Anyone’s Business: Can This Really Be Copyrighted?

By: In Our Words Staff

Welcome to Anyone’s Business, an article made by you.  We pose a question, and the article is created in the comments below.

Disney is in the process of acquiring various copyrights for merchandising and entertainment around Dia De Los Muertos.  This is not the first attempt but it seems to be the most vigorous attempt at commodifying and owning a cultural practice. How can we stop rampant copy-writing?  Furthermore how can something created and celebrated by a culture be owned by an outside entity, what will be enforced with these kind of copyrights?  There is an appropriation, a racism, to this action, what can be done to fight it?
