Soy Quien Soy: Trans Empowerment Collective, a queer grassroots collective providing support for trans* individuals and their allies in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago, is hosting a vigil in memory of Mexican transgender activist Agnes Torres Hernández.
Torres was found murdered outside her home in Puebla, Mexico, on March 12, 2012. Her throat was slit and her body burned and tortured.
The Chicago vigil is for all the members of the community who have experienced homophobia and/or transphobia. Everyone is invited to honor the life and work of Agnes at Broadway Youth Center on March 25, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. NOTE: BYC is not wheelchair accessible, and attendees must walk 1-2 flights of stairs.
UPDATE: Luis Fernando Bueno Mazzoco, 18, was arrested in Mérida, Yucatán, Mexico, in connection with the murder. He was one of the last people to have been in contact with Agnes in the hours before her death.
